The Grand Island Independent (Grand Island, NE), Tuesday, January 31, 1989; pg. 8 Alfred Skalka DEWEESE - Alfred D. Skalka, 60, of Deweese, died unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 27, at his home. Services were to be Tuesday morning at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Deweese with the Rev. Val Bartek officiating and burial, with military rites by the Deweese V.F.W. and Fairfield American Legion posts, in the parish cemetery. McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Skalka was born Sept. 9, 1928, on a farm near Deweese, the son of Joseph and Mary Skalka. He attended West Buffalo rural school and graduated from Fairfield High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the war he returned to the Deweese area to farm. He never married. He was a member of Our Lady of Assumption parish, the Deweese Community Club, the Deweese V.F.W. post and the Fairfield American Legion post. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Nims of Long Beach, Calif.; and three brothers, Stanley of Grand Island and Leo and Ivan, both of Deweese. He was preceded in death by his parents.
