Son of Chester Ferrington and his wife Adeline Curtis. George was listed in the 1860 census as born in Pennsylvania, but his enlistment papers state he was born in Ohio; both sources show he was born about 1838. His enlistment papers described him as 5' 7" tall, dark hair, dark complexion, and black eyes. George married Mariah E. Hibbard on 20 July 1857 in Henderson county, Illinois. At the time of his enlistment, on 28 March 1864, George was the father of a 2 year-old daughter, Olive Idella Ferrington . George served in Company B of the 59th Illinois Infantry, joining his brother William, who enlisted in 1863, and his brother John, who had joined earlier in the month. He was killed in the siege of Nashville, but was mistakenly listed as William in the official records. Even the local newspapers of the day listed that William, not George, had been killed. His brothers survived the war. Mariah remarried to John B. Joslin on 18 September 1866 in Galesburg, Knox county, Illinois, but died less than 6 years later. Daughter Olive, orphaned at the age of 9 years, was then raised by her maternal grandparents, Rev. Forestis I. Hibbard and his wife Olive F. Terpening.
