Bio
Full name and place of birth from veterans' burial records. Son of Chester Ferrington and his wife Adeline Curtis. John came to Illinois with his parents about 1850, and settled in Kelly township of Warren county. John married Susan Reed in Knox county, Illinois on 2 February 1861. Together, they were the parents of 3 children. Susan died before 1880, probably in Missouri. John returned to Illinois, where he married Ella E. Oldham, divorced from Harvey Tucker Raines. Together, they were the parents of 5 children born in both Illinois and Iowa. Ella divorced John, and married 3 more times, divorcing her third and fourth husbands as well. John enlisted in Company B of the 59th Illinois Infantry, serving with brothers William C. and George W. Ferrington. George was killed at Nashville late in the war. In later years, John's brother, William, lived with him in Burlington, as well as Harvey Tucker Raines and Philip Eugene Wood, both former husbands of his ex-wife, Ella Oldham.
