John was born 16 January 1871 in Jodlowka Walki Poland. His obituary (which has December 24, 1873) and tombstone (which has 1874) have a different date. He was the son of Stanislaus and Catherine Szawica Zaucha. He immigrated with his parents to the US but the family traditional story says his father died on the ship coming over. He first lived in Platte County with the family. At age 14, according to the 1880 census, he was working as a cattle herder in Colfax County near Rogers for William Wetterer. He lived in the Rogers area and also farmed near Genoa, Nance County. In 1918, he moved to Sherman county where he farmed until 1938. After his retirement, he lived with his sons, John and Basiel. He first married Stanislowa Jerecka on November, 13, 1893 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church at Duncan, NE. They had one daughter, Selma. He next married Anastasia Lassek on February 9, 1898 at Columbus, Nebraska. He and Anastasia had six children.
