Reuben was born to Alexander James and Tabitha Wills Dallas, at their homestead on Darrs' Creek, Bell County, Texas, the 5th of 7 children. Reuben's mother died days before his 10th birthday. Reuben's father remarried to Margaret T. Henry February 27, 1862, according to marriage records in the county, and they had one daughter, Jennie Dallas (b. 1867). Reuben first married a local girl, Louisa Catherine Harman, November 4, 1875 in Bell County, TX. Lou Cate's father's obituary, written by the local newspaper publisher himself, said Lou Cate's father was the nicest person and best friend any one could ever hope to know. We know little about Reuben and his first family, except there were two children born to the marriage, Dilly Dallas and James Dallas. We welcome any offspring to contact us. Reuben then married Mary Ellen Bevil, about 1881. The couple had five children, including a daughter who was born, along with her older brother William Otis Dallas, in Colorado. Little is known about their daughter, except that she died as a young child in Colorado. Reuben and Mary Ellen separated, it is believed, in 1889. A newspaper article in the Ardmore OK, newspaper, the Daily Ardmorite, on January 12, 1923, front page, cites Reuben arrived in Ardmore, Indian Territory, January 1, 1889. The article is not short, and it captures Reuben's initial employment contract, and that he soon purchased real estate and became a businessman in Ardmore. It was 1889, that Reuben's 2nd wife, my great grandmother, Mary Ellen (Bevil) Dallas, filed a complaint for divorce in Fischer County, TX citing that Reuben had beat her numerous times incuding while she was expecting her youngest child, Hayden Thomas Dallas. We do not find the divorce decree, at Fischer County, TX and are still receptive to anyone who might find it. Possible Reuben left with no divorce in place. He doesn't refer to his 2 previous wives in dozens of Ardmorite newspaper citations over 35 years, nor to his three surviving sons from that marriage, who are: Harry Dallas (my paternal grandfather); Clarence Dallas (my great uncle); and Hayden Thomas Dallas, also my great uncle. They are metnioned in the will of Reuben T. Dallas and the settlement of that will by Reuben's son, William Otis Dallas. Reuben took the oldest son, William, in 1899, to Oklahoma with him. We have letters William Otis Dallas wrote his mother and brothers from Ardmore, when it was still Indian Territory. We have a couple of photos with Otis and his two sons, RZ and LO, in NM at Clarence Dallas' ranch with Clarence's children, around the year of 1918, apx. Mary Ellen and Reuben T. Dallas were my great grandparents. William, Harry, Clarence and Hayden all lived to be senior citizens. Reuben married a 3rd time, to Martha Ellen Hayes according to newspaper items in Ardmore, November 15, 1893. She entered the married with Reuben Dallas with at least one son, Chester Rupe, and one daughter, Dovie Alice Rupe - whose grandson Dave Roberts provided some of these facts. and fotos. Arthur Wolverton Dallas was born in Ardmore to Reuben and Martha Ellen in 1897. Reuben's grandsons under Clarence and Harry recall knowing Arthur and Chester, and think they worked for Barnum and Bailey or a well-known circus. This has not been verified and we have little info (2021) about these 2 men after about 1920. Reuben owned a grocery store, real estate and other businesses in Ardmore. Grandchildren recall visiting him around 1931, in Ardmore and that 'he had a nice home'. Reuben's and Mary Ellen's son, William Otis Dallas, stayed in Ardmore with his father until he decided to become a preacher with the Christian Church. He pastored several, including Abilene, Port Arthur, TX and Corpus Christi. Family information is that Uncle Otis, as they called him, died while going to the pulpit in the church, one Sunday, in 1941. Uncle Otis married Alberta Zellers, and had two sons, RZ and LO Dallas. Reuben's last wife, often called 'Ellen' died in Ardmore in 1933 and Reuben died a year and a half later, February, 1935. His wife's grandson Dave Roberts, said his grandmother stayed until Reuben's death, serving as Reuben's caregiver the last months of his life. intereted parties are invited to contact us: [email protected] 1930 US Census: Reuben T Dallas Home in 1930: Ardmore, Carter, Oklahoma Age: 79 Born 1850 Birthplace: Bell County, Texas Relation to Head of House: Head Spouse's Name: Martha E Dallas Race: White Household Members: Reuben T Dallas 79 Martha E Dallas 71 Chester Roye 41 1920 US Census: Reuben T Dallas Home in 1920: Ardmore Ward 1, Carter, Oklahoma Age: 68 Born 1850 Birthplace:n Bell County, Texas Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) Spouse's Name: Martha E Dallas Father's Birth Place: Kentucky Mother's Birth Place: Missouri Marital Status: Married Race: White Home owned: Own Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Household Members: Reuben T Dallas 68 Martha E Dallas 60 Daltha A Dallas 16 Chester A Rupe 33 1910 US Census Reuben T Dallas Age 60 Estimated Birth Year: 1850 Birthplace: Texas Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: [Kentucky] Mother's Birth Place: i[Missouri] Spouse's Name: Martha Dallas Home in 1910: Ardmore Ward 1, Carter, Oklahoma Race: White Household Members: Reuben T Dallas 60 Martha Dallas 52 Arthur Dallas 13 Louise D Crocker 14 1900 US Census: Reuben T Dallas Home Ardmore, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory Age: 49 Birth Date: Nov 1850 Birthplace: Texas Race: White Relationship to head-of-house: Head Spouse's Name: Elen Dallas Household Members: Ruben T Dallas 49 Elen Dallas 41 Walter Otis Dallas 17 Auther Dallas 3 Dovey Roop 14 Chester Roop 12 Sallie Tedd 37
