Bio

Louise Catherine Harmon was one of seven children born to Matthew Frank and Mary Jane (Perryman) Harmon in Bell County, TX. She was nick named 'Lou Cate.' Lou Cate's father died in 1914, The Bartlett Tribune owner and editor wrote his obituary, admiringly saying 'a finer person could ever be known' in part, about his friend, Matthew Harmon. Six children and 30 grandchildren, 34 greats and his wife, survived Matthew in 1914. Lou Cate married Reuben T. Dallas (this author's great grandfather) November 4, 1875. They had two children: #1.James Walter Dallas II, who had at least two daughters, Roma Ota and Mary Lou Dallas; and #2. Mary Delilah 'Dilly' Dallas who married W.L. Kendrick. Her husband, Reuben T. Dallas was my paternal great grandfather. Lou Cate and Reuben Dallas divorced about 1879. Both remarried - she to William Crain Sparks and Reuben remarried to my g.grandmother, Mary Ellen Bevel (Dallas). Lou Cate and Sparks had these children: Dora S., Robert Lee and Vera Sparks. Lou Cate is buried at the Holland Cemetery, not far from where she and Reuben were raised. Reuben's parents established the Dallas Cemetery in Bell County, TX, which was part of their homestead on Darrs Creek, not too far from Salado, TX. Louise Catherine's death cert was signed by Mary D. Kendrick, if we read the signature correctly. She died at the age of 69 years, according to the death cert but we think it was 77; of cerebral hemorrhage with arterio schlerosis, on the certificate received 11.6.1937 at the TX Bur. of Statistics. Death Cert #49323. Lou Cate lived to almost 77 years of age and is buried not far from where she was born and lived much of her life. An online obituary in the Waco-Times Herald, p.3, Sat. Oct. 9, 1937 for her reads: Funeral services were held Thursday for Mrs. Louise Katherine Harman Dallas Sparks, widow of the late Will Sparks, one of Bell County's most prominent residents. She died in Dallas Wednesday. Services were held at the Holland Cemetery, with Rev. C.T. Brockett, pastor of the Holland Methodist Church, officiating. Mrs. Sparks was a member of one of the earliest and most prominent families of Bell County, TX, her husband having founded the Sparks Community between Little River & Holland in SE Bell County. Her husband was a brother and uncle of Sam Sparks Sr. and Sam Sparks Jr., both former sheriffs of Bell County. the latter having been State Treasurer. Survivors who attended the funeral were two brothers, Ed Harman of Lampasas, and M.L. Harman of Copperas Cove, a sister Mrs. W.T. Flanigan of Georgetown, two daughters Mrs. W.L. Kendrick of Dallas, Mrs. Vera Bryant of Houston, and a son Robert Sparks of Tucson, Arizona. Interested parties are invited to contact us: Linda Dallas Sharp [email protected]
