Bio

Clarence Dallas was my grandfather, Harry Dallas' next younger brother. Clarence, Harry, their mother and youngest brother Hayden, left their ranch in Fisher County, TX, in covered wagons, to homestead the "Caprock" area, 17 miles west of Tatum, NM in 1910. Clarence got a ranch on the main highway from Tatum to Roswell, NM, within walking distance to his older brother (my grandfather), Harry Dallas' homestead ranch. Clarence went back to Texas to marry his sweetheart, and convinced her to come back to his new homestead in New Mexico. Together they raised 5 wonderful children, operated the Dallas Cache Grocery on their property, and ranched for many decades. Clarence completed a degree in business, and was known all over the county as the best record keeper one could find. Along with accounting, notary and other records, Clarence documented life on the ranch with photos, documents and stories, passed along to all who were interested, especially his youngest son, Jody Dallas who purchased the ranch from his parents. Clarence and the oldest brother, William Otis Dallas, had sons of a similar age. Marshall and Marion were Clarence and Mae's oldest children. Clarence and Mae ensured each of their children developed musical talent. All five entertained around the ranch country for many years. Lois (Amy) taught Jody to play the piano. Jody was known until his last months of life to play dinner music daily for all to enjoy. Marshall played his violin until his last year of life. Preston often led the singing quintet. Clarence and Mae were the most hospitable people in the ranch area. Jody Dallas and his offspring captured and saved a great deal of the Caprock area ranching history by dedicating the Dallas Cache Grocery, hundreds of artifacts, records and photos which can be enjoyed by the public, visiting Tatum, NM.
