GENOA — Alfred Louis Valasek Sr., 82, of Genoa died Thursday, March 19, 2015, in St. Edward. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. Burial will take place on Monday afternoon in Greeley. Rice Funeral Home in Genoa is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Valasek was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Greeley County to Mike and Anna (Kowalski) Valasek. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Betty; his sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred and Sarah Valasek Jr. of Omaha and Louie and Elizabeth Valasek of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Dave Dobson of Primrose; a stepdaughter and her spouse, Rose and Randy Butcher of Missouri; and a brother, Mike Valasek of St. Paul. Also surviving are six grandchildren Jordan Anderson, Dylan Anderson, Arianna Valasek, Celeste Valasek, Brooke Valasek and Sutton Valasek. Al grew up in Palmer with his family, attending country school until the eighth grade. On Dec., 13, 1969, he married Laurel Jane Tuma in Wolbach. To this union, three children were born. Al worked on the family farm in Palmer until 1974, when he moved to Platte Center. He worked at Henke Manufacturing of Columbus for 25 years as a welder building feeder wagons. Later, he worked for Sands as a welder. On July 2, 1987, Al married Betty Jean Crawford in Columbus. They moved to Genoa in 1992 and Al retired at the age of 61. As a youth, Al was a prize fighting boxer known as “Grasshopper.” He also enjoyed playing his accordion, Polish music, fishing, hunting, gardening and yard work. Al was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, George, Edmund, Leo, Allie and Joseph; a sister, Irene Slizoski; and grandparents, Gregory and Josephine (Shuda) Kowalski.
