Bio

Polish version of his name was Jozef Szawica. Son of Jan Szawica (John Savidge) & Hedvigis Rzepa. Married to Mary Elizabeth Siemek (Marianna Siemek) on 2-23-1882 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church at Columbus, NE. Columbus (Nebraska) Telegram 23 March 1945 Columbus- Joseph Savage, 92, died yesterday afternoon in Columbus, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Sophia Haun. Mr. Savage had farmed in Polk county for many years and retired from farming and moved to Oregon to reside of 25 years. He came to Columbus from Oregon and remained here since. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Savage; four sons, John Savage of New York, Joe Savage of Santa Monica, Calif., and Edward Savage of Riverside, Calif.; four daughters, Mrs. Ann Hoovan of Chatham, N. J., Mrs. Catherine Koziol of Chicago, Mrs. L. L. VanderHeiden of Oregon City, Ore., and Mrs. John Briggs of Columbus; one sister, Mrs. Haun of Columbus; 26 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. One son, James Savage, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 8 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's church and burial will be at Tarnov. The body will be taken from the Gahan funeral home to the Haun home at 2 p.m. Sunday, to be until the hour of service. ------------------------------------------- Note: His address on the 1932 probate of his son, James, is given as Independence, Oregon. Note: Joseph and his wife were estranged for many years starting sometime about 1905 or so. Joseph lived other places and so far I have not found him on any census from that time until he moved back to Columbus and lived in a cottage behind the residence of his sister, Sophie Haun.
