Given name: Josephine Hildegarde Szawica. Daughter of Josef (Joseph Savage) & Mary Elizabeth (Shemek) (Marianna Siemek)Szawica. Born on a farm near Silver Creek. The parents had a farm in Valley Precinct in Polk County south of the Platte River where some of the children were born. Obituary April 1984 Cedar Rapids, NE--Josephine Vanderheiden, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday at the Aurora hospital. Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. The Rev. John Staroska will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery (Other funeral arrangements omitted here). She was born Dec. 25, 1889, at Silver Creek, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Siemek Savage. She attended St. Michael's school at Tarnov. She married Lou Vanderheiden on June 14, 1911, at Tarnov. They lived in the Cedar Rapids area for 45 years, and in 1961, moved to Grand Island. In 1979 they moved to Aurora. Mr. Vanderheiden died June 3, 1979. Mrs. Vanderheiden was a dressmaker. She was a longtime member of St. Anthony's parish, later a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish in Grand Island and most recently a member of St. Mary's parish in Aurora, and of their altar societies. She also was a member of the Third Order of Dominic at Aurora. Survivors include two sons, Lawrence of Aurora and James of Hayward, Calif.; three daughters, Dorothy Denn and Mrs. William (Marietta) Curnyn, both of Driftwood, Texas, and Adelaide Trelstad of Salem, Ore.; a brother, Stanley Savage of Bend, Ore., 25 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son and seven brothers and sisters.
