Bio

Mary was born in Szynwald Poland. The name on her baptismal record is " Marianna Siemek." She was born to Ignatius & Marianna (Plebanek) Siemek. When she was three years old, her father died. Her mother remarried in Poland to a cousin of her first husband and they immigrated on the ship Pommerania arriving in New York City on May 29, 1878 when Mary was 13 years old. She married Joseph Savage (Josef Szawica) on February 23, 1882 in Columbus, Nebraska. They lived in Polk County on a farm; in Tarnov, Nebraska; and spent several years in Chicago,Illinois but she and some of the children returned to Tarnov, Nebraska. Mary eventually moved to Columbus where she lived the rest of her life.
