He came to Illinois when about 18 years of age, two years later he returned to Ohio, and on April 22, 1865 he was married to Elizabeth Johnson and returned to Illinois with his bride to make their home. To this union were born five children, namely Alice, Frank, Sarah, George, and Katherine. With the exception of Frank, all preceded him in death. His first wife having died, he was again married November 22, 1878, to Rebecca Adney, and to this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagonseller of Birds. In the year 1884, during a revival meeting conducted by Rev. Fleener at Otterbein Chapel, he was converted, joining the United Brethren church, later he moved near Canaan Primitive Baptist church to which place his membership was transferred and remained at the time of his death. Uncle Art, as he was known among all his friends, remained faithful and loyal to the cause that he had espoused, which was backed by a life of fruitfulness. He was broadminded and enjoyed the fellowship of all God's people regardless of denomination or faith. He was a citizen who always stood four-square for truth and honesty and as a father, he was affectionate and kind, always having the welfare of his family at heart. For the past ten years he has been failing in health, and during the last three years he with his companion have made their home with their daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagonseller of Birds. On January 19th he fell in the home, breaking his hip, and from that time no hopes were entertained for his recovery. He was conscious until shortly before his death, and assured those at his bedside that he was ready for the Master's call. He leaves to mourn one brother, Chris Stevenson, of Russellville, one son, Frank Stevenson, and one daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagonseller, both of Birds, 10 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the U. B. church in Birds conducted by Rev L. B. Johnson, assisted by Rev R. G. Mumak; interment at Otterbein Chapel."
