Mike Effle Killed Word was received from Bloomfield Thursday about eleven o'clock that Mike Effle has been fatally stabbed a short time before. We have been unable to learn the particulars, any further than he got into an altercation with a stranger, who stabbed him and he dying almost instantly. The stranger was taken into custody immediately and Sheriff Burns notified, who went to Bloomfield on the evening train. It seems to be a case of cold blooded murder. Mike Effe is a son of Nick Effle, living in Logan township and is well known here. He is generally spoken of as being a quiet young man, although he would take very little abuse from anyone. Extracted from: The Creighton News 12 Feb 1909 ******** "Big Mike" Murdered Michael Effle Stabbed to Death by Hallan Sorey Our community was shocked Thursday forenoon about 10:30 by the report that a murder, the first one in Bloomfield, had been committed in Maxwell's pool hall with Michael Effle, "Big Mike" as he was commonly called, as the victim. This report was quickly found to be correct, when his dead body was found to be lying in the southeast corner of the room and when Hollan Sorey was placed behind the bars of the city jail as his murderer. From the testimony gotten out before the coroner's jury, it was learned that "Big Mike" in company of Sorey and three or four other companions, started out early in the morning, after a night spent in a poker game, on a round to the saloons, picking a quarrel with pretty near everybody that he came in contact with and especially having his eye on Sorey, abusing him at every opportunity. The final wind up came at Maxwell's chop house and pool hall, when Sorey, being repeatedly abused and, so to say, being run into the corner, took out his knife and used it against the body of the bully. How the stabbing really occurred, nobody seems to know as no one of those present admits to have seen it, but the remains that "Big Mike" was stabbed twice in the breast, one of the stabs penetrating the heart and causing internal hemmorrage, which caused his death. A coroners jury composed of H.W. Mueller, B.Y. High, W.H. Bosse, Nick Paper, J.W. Grand and John Sutton, impanelled by Coroner Kalar and, after hearing 17 witness, all of whom testified that Effle was of quarrelsome disposition and that he was trying to pick a quarrel with everybody he came in contact with that morning, rendered a verdict, that "We believe from the evidence given that Michael Effle came to his death by a knife wound inflicted about 3 and one-half inches below and to the right of his left nipple, which was inflected by knife in the hand of one Hollan Sorey at Maxwell's pool hall in Bloomfield, Neb. between 10 and 11 a.m. of said day." The preliminary hearing of H. Sorey was held this foremoon, with the result that he was bound over to the district court under a $2000 bond, which was immediately signed by twelve of our business men.--Bloomfield Journal Extracted from: The Creighton News 19 Feb 1909 Bios contributed by Find A Grave Member #47075564
