Jeff D. Mankins, 76-year-old Shamrock man, and one of this county's colorful early day residents, died at his home there Sunday evening, March 14. He had been in ill health for three years, and confined to his bed for most of the time since November 4. Funeral services were conducted from the Baptist Church in Shamrock with Rev. Virgil Lollar in charge.... It was as a member of the Texas Rangers that Mr. Mankins came to Collingsworth County shortly after its organization. He often recalled that it was to settle trouble between the Rocking Chair Ranch and small settlers who were coming in that he was sent here. Mr. Mankins possessed a rich store of memories of this area during the days of its settlement and he would tell in a spirited manner of his experiences during that period. He was born at Georgetown January 25, 1866. On January 18, [1894] he was married to Miss Eula C. Coleman, who died November 1, 1928. On November 18, 1934, he was married to Miss Annice Burcham. In addition to his wife, Mr. Mankins is survived by a niece, Mrs. Fred Parks of Shamrock, whom he reared; a stepdaughter, Lorraine Baxter of Shamrock; and five sisters and three brothers.
