Bio

Del Norte Prospector dated Oct. 8, 1948 Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Episcopal Church for Mrs. Dorothy Allam Graham, 39, who died Friday noon at her apartment at the Hotel el Rio . Rev. Robert Whiting officiated at the rites. Business of the community stopped during the services for one of Del Norte’s most active business owners. A sudden heart attack was the cause of her death. The tragedy almost paralleled that of her sister, Ruby, who died in January of this year. Dorothy had made her usual round of business houses—chatting, shopping, good morning-ing folks, and became suddenly ill after a customary cup of coffee. Her brothers, husband and physician were with her when she died. Dorothy Elizabeth Allam was born in Del Norte January 29, 1909, the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Allam. This community had always been her home. She attended the local schools and was graduated with the class of 1925. She attended Denver University one year and then the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, for three, receiving her degree in the spring of 1929. She and her sister, Ruby, were associated in business from 1933 to early 1941 when Dorothy took over the management of the hotel. She had been employed as bookkeeper at the Del Norte Lumber Co., stenographer to the late W. Scott Carroll, and secretary to Dr. R. B. Weiler, formerly of here. She was married in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Emmet J. Graham of Del Norte on November 18, 1944 and they have operated and made their home at the hotel. January of this year she finished out three terms as secretary of the Del Norte Chamber of Commerce, and resigned because of to her duties after two deaths in the family. She had helped with the annual seed show a number of years. She was a member of Clio Club many years, of a bridge club, several foursomes. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. Dorothy was friendly, intelligent and ambitious, a good business woman, always willing to do her part, and then some, in community affairs. Only a few minutes before her death she was around making contacts and gathering information on improvement of the three-block stretch from No. 160 highway to the river bridge on No. 112. She took pride in her hotel, its service and accommodations. Dozens of summer visitors at the hotel remembered, came back the next season, and the next. Her family, her close friends, her flowers were things she cherished. She is survived by her husband, two brothers, George T. and John T., one sister, Mrs. B. L. Prosch of Chicago, a niece and nephew, and a host of friends here and who have visited Del Norte. Her father died 10 years ago in May; her mother last November. ~Courtesy of Rosalind Weaver
