Bio

Del Norte Prospector dated December 31, 1965 John T. Allam, 58, resident of Del Norte all his life, died suddenly of a heart attack in the hotel lobby Monday morning. He was an ex-city councilman and mayor, former bank director and was currently serving as president of the board of the Del Norte Federal Savings and Loan Association. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the First Presbyterian church, of which he was a member, and burial was in the Del Norte cemetery. John was born in Del Norte on April 2, 1907, the second son of Thomas G. and Naphie Allam, and graduated from the Del Norte Schools with the 1925 class. He attended the University of Denver a short time, returning and following the lettuce deal for several years, working as a crate maker and lidder here, and spent a season or two in Arizona. With his brother George, they opened the pool hall, which they operated in partnership for twenty-two years before selling the business several year ago and retiring. He and Miss Helen Keck were married in 1945. This Thursday would have been an anniversary. He became a member of the building and loan board in 1947 and had been president since 1953. He served a term as mayor in the mid 1950 period. He was member of Modern Woodman of America lodge when it was active. In his business and on those boards of which he was a member he was noted for his willingness, attention to detail, regularity, and candid judgments. To close friends and associates, his observations—generally only when asked for—were frank and accurate. He was interested in old friends, he had a funnybone that came out often, and he was always interesting and informed. He and Helen took great pride in their summer flowers and garden and were expert. His parents and two sisters, Ruby and Dorothy, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, a sister, Julia Prosch, a brother George T. and other relatives. Pallbearers were Charles Frye, Lawrence Adams, Amine Skaff, R. Sam Wright, Earl Rice, Frank Casselman, and honoraries were Vern McCallister, Ralph Off, John Reason, Ralph Rominger, Ray Sechrist and Jim Foley. ~Courtesy of Rosalind Weaver, Cindy Wojciechowicz, and Sandra Lujan.
