Bio
M. T. Butler, for years prominent timber man in the employ of the Brown Paper Mill company, died at his residence in the Mt. Pleasant community last Friday, March 4. He was 78 years of age. His death came after a lengthy illness and did not come as a surprise, although his many relatives and friends regret to hear of his passing. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery under the direction of the Riser & Son Funeral Home of Columbia. Pallbearers were his grandsons, I. H. Butler, Jr., Howell Butler, John Edward Meredith, J. D. McHenry, Jimmy Fisher and Joe Antal. Honorary pallbearers were old friends of the family. Mr. Butler was born in Meridian, Miss., but moved from there to this parish when but a young boy, and had resided in Caldwell parish since that time. He married Miss Lula Banks of Caldwell parish in April, 1898. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist church. He had been working with the Brown Paper Mill of West Monroe in the woods department for 25 years. Before this time he was with the Louisiana Central Lumber Co. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Mrs. M. T. Butler, a sister of A. C. (Bud) Banks of ward 5 and Fred Banks of Columbia; three daughters: Mrs. Beatrice Meredith of Pineville, Mrs. Homer Fisher of Columbia, and Mrs. Edna McHenry of West Monroe; and one son, I. H. Butler of West Monroe. He is also survived by a brother, Armster Butler of ward five, and a sister, Mrs. Tressie Cole, also of the ward five community. One daughter, Mrs. Quincy Prestridge, preceded him in death several years ago. She was the mother of Mrs. Mildred Eason Slack, now residing in Baton Rouge, whom Mr. and Mrs. Butler reared in their home. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
