Co. L 9th Ill Cav ∼ Son of Luke and Lucy Ann Miner. Samuel came to Illinois with his parents as a toddler, settling in Floyd Township near Cameron. In 1861, Samuel enlisted in Company L of the 9th Illinois Cavalry. State of Illinois muster roll records show that Samuel was rejected from the service about 7 weeks after his enlistment. However, his obituary published in the local newspapers claimed he was captured as a member of the 9th Illinois Cavalry, and inprisoned at Little Rock, Arkansas for 6 months, where he contracted the disease which lead to his death. He was reportedly released from prison and was enroute to his Illinois home when he died at St. Louis, Missouri. His private headstone was engraved with this same information. He was buried on September 29th.
