Bio

GENEVIEVE JONES Genevieve Katherine (Mazanec) Jones, age 87 of Hemingford, Nebraska died August 1, 2010 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance after a 3 year struggle with melanoma. She was born May 31, 1923 at Archer, Nebraska to Edward and Mary (Pekarek) Mazanec. Her family moved to rural Dawes County as a young girl where she went to school through the 8th grade. She then went to high school at Assumption Academy in Chadron, Nebraska graduating high school in 1941. Genevieve served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict as a Staff Sergeant from January 1951 to October 1953 receiving an honorable discharge at the end of her enlistment. During her service in the Air Force, she served in Washington D.C. and at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver Colorado. Although it took 10 years, she completed her B.S. from Chadron State College in 1953 using her Bootstrap from the Air Force to finish her last semester. She taught for 2 years at District #40 in rural Dawes County. She married Maurice Edward Jones in Denver Colorado in 1954. In 1960, she moved back to Hemingford after the death of her mother to care for her father until his death. She worked for the University of Nebraska at the Northwest Agricultural Laboratory in Alliance Nebraska for 18 years from 1962 to 1980 and was an employee of Good Samaritan Village for nearly 20 years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, her children's and grandchildren's activities, community service, and especially growing flowers in her yard. Genevieve was a member of Hemingford United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary James Barry Post #7, Rebekah Lodge, and 8 and 40. After retirement she enjoyed being a Foster Grandparent at St. Agnes Academy for several years through the Green Thumb Program. She is survived by her children, Maureen Jones of Hemingford, Anthony Jones of Alliance, Michael Jones of Bellevue, Nebraska, and Barbara (David) Anderson of Bellevue, NE, and her grandchildren, Dana Jones of Hemingford and Becky Anderson of Bellevue, NE. She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Ernest and Adrian Mazanec, her brothers and sisters-in-law Emery and Ardennye Mazanec, George and Mildred Mazanec, and Arnold and Rachel Mazanec and her sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy and Elmer Lehl and Mary and Merle Estes. She was a warm, loving woman who had a strong belief in education for women, believed in service to her country and was a dedicated mother and grandmother. In the years following the deaths of her siblings, she became the center of the family for her many nieces and nephews and was much beloved by all. She served her country, her community, her faith, and her family with love and humor and will be greatly missed. In her passing, she want all of us to remember to take care of one another, be kind to others and remember to laugh every day. During her battle with cancer, she was asked to participate in a clinical study of melanoma, and with her usual benevolent attitude said "if the last thing I do in this life is to help someone else, then I guess that's a good way to go". Ever the optimist, her attitude about life in general could be summed up when faced with times of difficulty by saying "tomorrow will be a better day". Memorial services will be Friday, August 6 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Private military graveside services and burial will be held at a later date at the State Veterans Cemetery at Alliance, Nebraska. The family requests memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to the Scholarship Fund at Chadron State College Foundation, 1000 Main Street, Chadron, NE. Courtesy of Bates Gould Funeral Home
