Ludvik was a native of Kostelec u Stipia in Moravia, which at that time was part of the Empire of Austria-Hungary. Ludvik came to Texas in 1912 with his widowed mother and brother, Joe V., and sister, Aloisie Hradil and her family. Ludvik Smesny was only 12 years of age when his mother died in 1914. Ludvik lived for some time with his sister, Aloisie Hradil, and her family, in Beasley, Texas. After his brother, Joe V.'s wife died in 1921, Ludvik and Joe V. farmed together for two years. Ludvik married Frances Skarpa on Nov. 9, 1926, in Wallis, Texas. They were the parents of five children. After their marriage, Ludvik and Frances Smesny moved to the Liberty County community of Eastgate where Ludvik's sister, Frances Smesny Peska, and her family were living at the time. Ludvik's brothers, Teodor and Joe V., also moved their families to Eastgate. At the same time, Frances Smesny's widowed father and several of her siblings also moved to the Eastgate/Dayton area. The Eastgate Community in southwestern Liberty County is known as "the easternmost Czech settlement in Texas". Ludvik and Frances Smesny purchased a 100-acre farm in Eastgate from Emil and Bessie Hajovsky on February 8, 1940. Frances died in 1945 at the age of 40 years. After raising his children, Ludvik married Annie Hajdik on Oct. 25, 1952, in Sealy, Texas. Ludvik and Annie Smesny resided on Ludvik's farm in Eastgate until they sold the property on April 15, 1963, and moved to Sealy, Texas. ************************************************************************************ OBITUARY FROM THE SEALY NEWS: Last Rites For Ludvik Smesny Held January 16 Ludvik Smesny, 86, of Sealy died Saturday morning, January 14, 1989 in the Azalea Manor Nursing Home in Sealy.
