Bio

Mary Martha Miller was born on Monday, October 12, 1885 in Tours, McLennan County, Texas. She was baptized on November 26, 1885 by Rev. Andrew Badelon, who was a missionary priest to St. Martin's Church at that time. He was the resident pastor at St. Mary's Church in Waco and traveled to Tours (St. Martinsville) on the last Sunday of each month. She was the oldest child of fifteen children born to Paul Curt Miller and Mary Weinberger. Mary Martha Miller married Martin Joseph Detterman on November 3, 1904 at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Tours, McLennan Co., Texas. Mary was 19 and Martin was 24 years of age when they married. Mary mothered 16 children – 5 died as infants – 11 lived to maturity. Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and sewing. She entered fairs with her baked goods, jellies and jams and won several ribbons. Martin, entered livestock in the fair. He had a prize Jersey Cow. Mary and Martin lived next to their daughter and son-in-law, Estelle and Elbert Goates for several years. Estelle and Elbert built a house by Martin and Mary Detterman's, with one lot in between. Later they had a house built for Martin and Mary on the lot that was in between. Mary and Martin lived with their daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Fritz Jares, in their later years until their deaths. Researched and compiled by Andrea (Berger) Walston
