Bio

Daughter of Jakob Hollub and Barbara Holub Hollub Death came as a tender messenger of relief to the patient, tired soul of Mrs. Frances Zissa, pioneer settler of this community, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 1966. She died at the Trinity Lutheran Home where she had been a resident patient for 22 months, since suffering a stroke on July 31, 1964. She attained the age of 92 years, 5 months and 3 days. Funeral services were held from the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, at 8:45 a.m. Friday, June 3 and continued at the Shiner Catholic Church with Requiem Mass said by the Rev. Father John J. Hanacek. Rosary was recited at the Buffington Chapel at 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial and graveside services were delayed until Saturday morning, June 4 at 8:30 o'clock to await the arrival of a daughter and son-in-law from Fresno, California. The date was the 22nd anniversary of the burial of her husband. Mrs. Zissa, nee Frantiska Holub, was born December 28, 1873 in the State of Iowa. When she was three years of age, the family came to Texas and settled near Moravia, a settlement which her father, Jakub Holub, founded. In 1889 at the age of 16, she was married to Hynek Zissa in the Catholic Church at Praha. The first year they rented a farm at Moravia and the second year they purchased 75 acres of land in the Vlastenec-Midway community where they resided for nine years. In 1900, they bought a 144-acre farm in "Turkey Bottom" near the Guadalupe River. They lived here for twenty years when in 1920, they decided to retire to a smaller farm of 44 acres closer to Shiner. After several weeks of illness, Mr. Zissa died June 2, 1944. Mrs. Zissa then moved to the town of Shiner and lived alone for about 16 years. Due to the infirmities of old age, it became necessary to make her home with some of her children. Mrs. Zissa was the youngest and last surviving member of her immediate family of eleven children born to Jakub and Barbara Holub. Mr. and Mrs. Zissa were also the parents of eleven children, all of whom were reared to adulthood. Mrs. Zissa was an honored member of the SPJST Lodge and the second last surviving Charter Member of the Order. She and her husband joined Lodge No. 10, Shiner, July 1, 1897. This date is considered the official date of the founding of the SPJST in Texas, since the charter was drawn up in July of 1897. They later transferred to Lodge 45, Vlastenec when it was organized 19 October 1902. In the old days Vlastenec was called 'Michna." Surviving are five sons, Julius Wm. Zissa of Shiner, August and John Zissa of Yoakum, Emil Zissa of Angleton, Louis Zissa of Westhoff; four daughters, Mrs. Ludwig (Agnes) Kasper of Fresno, Calif., Mrs. Frank (Albina) Janacek of Austin, Mrs. John (Julie) Krajca Sr. and Mrs. John (Emma) Horak, both of Ennis; 29 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two children, a son, Vincent (Jim) Zissa of Shiner, died May 11, 1966, and a daughter, Mrs. Vincent J. (Annie) Jiral Jr. of Floresville, died March 28, 1965; also 4 brothers, John, Anton, Jim and Frank Holub; and 6 sisters, Mrs. Teresa Svoboda, Mrs. Tonka Ermis, Mrs. Joe (Mary) Michna, Mrs. Frank (Annie) Nickel, Mrs. Frank (Julie) Hrncir and Mrs. J. E. (Agnes) Jalufka. Another beloved mother and pioneer settler has gone to her reward and has left a noble heritage of Christian devotion to her church. She was identified for 76 years with the interests of this community and was honored and respected by all who knew her, leaving a memory to be cherished by those who held her near and dear.
