Bio

Ruth C. Gartner, 92, Topeka, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at a Topeka care facility. She was born Oct. 11, 1911, in Topeka, the daughter of John Hafner and Margaret M. Jacobs. She was a lifelong resident of Topeka. Mrs. Gartner was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle No. 503. She married William J. Gartner on Nov. 24, 1932, in Topeka. He preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1994. Mrs. Gartner also was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald Gartner, in 1994, and Bernard Gartner, in 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Calvin-Stephens; a brother, Ray Hafner; and three sisters, Helen Dechand, Marcella Hertlein and Margaret Mauer, all of Topeka; nine grandchildren; and 18 great- grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Carl Dekat at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Gartner will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited by the Daughters of Isabella at 4:30 p.m. and the parish at 6:30 p.m. Contributions may be made to the Ruth C.
