Topeka State Journal Monday 3 Jan., 1972, pg. 16: Services for Mathew J. Hafner, 54, Topeka, will be Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Hafner will lie in state Wednesday at Brennan Funeral Home, where parish rosary will be recited. Mr. Hafner was dead on arrival at a Topeka hospital Sunday after he became ill at his home. An autopsy was scheduled. He was born March 10, 1917 in Topeka where he had lived most of his life. He was a storekeeper for the Santa Fe Railway in the purchasing dept. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mr. Hafner was married to the former Catherine Desch. Survivors besides his widow of the home include a son, Leo Hafner, of the home; a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Cramer, Topeka; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Jacobs Hafner, Topeka; 5 brothers, Bill Hafner, San Diego, Jake Hafner, Alma, V.A. Hafner, Lawrence Hafner and Ray Hafner, all of Topeka; and 6 sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ciochon, Tonganoxie, Mrs. Ann Mauer, Mrs. Ruth Gartner, Mrs. Margaret Mauer, Mrs. Helen Dechand, and Mrs. Marcella Hertlein, all of Topeka.
