Bio

Valentine A. "Tiny" Hafner, 69, Topeka, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 1989 at a local hospital. He was born February 14, 1919 in Topeka, the son of John G. and Margaret Jacobs Hafner. Mr. Hafner was a World War II Army veteran serving from July 7, 1941 to Sept. 4, 1945. He served overseas for 39 months as a member of the 11th Armored Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, which saw service in Africa and Italy. Mr. Hafner worked at the Santa Fe office building, retiring in 1980. Mr. Hafner lived all his life in Topeka. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Moose Lodge No. 555 and Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion. He was married to Maxine A. Lillard on June 5, 1946 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Jan Howard, Topeka and Mrs. Tom Michael, Silver Lake; a brother, Raymond Hafner, Topeka; five sisters, Anna Mauer, Ruth Gartner, Margaret Mauer, Helen Dechand and Marcella Hertlein, all of Topeka; and four grandchildren. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Parker-Price Mortuary with burial in Rochester Cemetery. Mr. Hafner will lie in state after 5 p.m. today at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Topeka Capital-Journal, 1/13/1989
