J.F. Urbanovsky Killed By Freight Train Tuesday The tragic death of J.F. (Joe) Urbanovsky, which occurred Tuesday night, May 21, brought grief to many friends in West and community. Death came as a result of being struck by a southbound Katy freight train at about 10 o'clock. Mr. Urbanovsky was walking toward his house on West Oak Street when the tragedy occurred. He evidently failed to see the fast freight, the Comet, as it approached. Several people were in town at the time, and a few saw the train hit some object, but stated that they did not know what it was. After the train had passed, they investigated and found the body of Joe Urbanovsky just north of the Katy Depot. The train crew, not aware of the tragedy, did not stop. The passing from life of this well-known and prominent citizen of West, (illegible) the sorrow that is always felt after the untimely death, and especially sad was the death with the tragic accident connected. J.F. Urbanovsky was born near Tours, Texas, January 14, 1885. He had lived in this section all of his live. Coming to West from Tours when a young man, he went to work as a dry goods clerk for the Tubbs Dry Goods Store. In 1904 he was employed by the dry goods firm of Skrabanek & Schiller and later became a partner in the firm of Skrabanek and Urbanovsky. A few years later, Schiller, Skrabanek and Urbanovsky formed a partnership and organized the Star Store, Inc., with a capital stock of $25,0000.00. Mr. Urbanovsky was active in civic, social, commercial and political affairs. For many years he was a director in the old West State Bank. He was elected alderman April 7, 1914, later becoming city commissioner, and served until April 1, 1919. Funeral services will be held from the residence at 8:30 and at the Presbyterian Church at 9:00 o'clock, Friday morning, May 24, with Rev. H.E. Brooks in charge. Interment will be at Bold Springs Cemetery. Active pall bearers will be: P.S. Skrabanek, Rud. J. Marak, Joe Svacek, Andrew Janek, all of West; Tom Hunter of Wichita Falls, and E. R. Purdy of Santa Anna. Honorary pallbearers: Aug. J. Morris, Joe Holasek, Method Pazdral, Rud. Kolar, Frank Cocek, Vinc Sula, Tom Motis, M.J. Mazanec, Chas. Smajstrla, J. R. Polasek, Rud. Treska. Survivors are his widow; one son, Elo Urbanovsky of Amhurst, Mass.; one daughter, Miss Lillian Urbanovsky, West, 2 half sisters, Mrs. Millie Kousal and Mrs. Frank Pustejovsky; 6 half-brothers, Frank and Vincent Urbanovsky, A.W.
