Bio

LUBBOCK - Elo J. Urbanovsky, 80, of Lubbock, formerly of West, a longtime landscape architect, died July 13, 1988 at a Lubbock hospital. Services were 10 a.m. July 16 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Lubbock, the Rev. Michael O'Dwyer officiating. Graveside services were 10 a.m. July 18 at St. Mary's Cemetery in West. Mr. Urbanovsky was born December 20, 1907 in West. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1931 with a major in architectural design. He was a landscape instructor at Texas A&M from 1931 to 1934. He did graduate work at the University of Maine from 1934 to 1935. He had been a landscape architect for the U.S. Department of Agriculture regional office in Dallas and for Veterans Administration hospitals in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. He taught landscaping in San Antonio schools from 1940 to 1944 and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a horn professor emeritus at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He was a president of Texas Turfgrass Association, director of Southwest Parks and Recreation Training Institute, and served on the board of governors of the National Recreation Park Association. He was chairman of St. Mary's Hospital Board. He had been a consultant for the Texas State Board of Health, Prairie View A&M University, Hardin-Simmons University, Lubbock Christian University, Dallas Baptist College, New Mexico A&M College and Abilene Christian College. He was a member of the American Society for Landscape Architects, Rotary International, Texas Highway Beautification Committee and Christ the King Catholic Church. He received a distinguished fellowship in the American Institute of Park Executives and was past president and a board member of the American Institute of Park Executives. He received the Cornelius Amry Pugsley Bronze Medal and Pro Excelsia ET Pontfice from Pope John XXIII. He had worked closely with Lady Bird Johnson on numerous beautification projects, including those at the Lyndon B. Johnson Ranch. Survivors include a son, Joe Urbanovsky of Lubbock; a sister, Lillian Kozelski of West; and two grandchildren. Kotch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
