Jacob was a farmer all of his life. He owned a farm northwest of Monroe, Iowa and was very successful. When he retired in 1941, he and his wife Lucinda, who he called Peg, moved into a beautiful home in Monroe. He still owned the farm and sharecroppers worked the land. The farm was sold to his daughter and son-in-law, Lela Berkenbosch and Wiley Roberts of Prairie City upon the death of Lucinda. Jacob and Lucinda were members of the United Methodist Church in Monroe. In his early years of retirement he made his own wine and beer. He really enjoyed just sitting outside and admiring his small garden. A friend and he had competition on who could grow the largest potato.
