Bio
Vera was born on the family farm that was located northwest of Monroe, Iowa to Jacob and Lucinda Wood Berkenbosch. She was educated at country schools through the 8th grade. She was a stay at home mom who suffered the loss of four children before they reached adulthood. Three passed away as infants and one lived until he was three and a half years old. She made sure that the rest of her children knew about them and of her love for them. Her children were thankful that she was home when they came there after school or just whenever they needed her. Those living to adulthood are her daughter Willadean Wallace and sons Bill, Henry Jr., Ronald and Dick. She was also heavily involved in the American Legion Auxillary and her church. **************************************************************************** Mrs. Henry (Vera Pauline) Steenhoek, 82, a longtime resident of Monroe, died Saturday morning at Heritage Manor in Newton. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Monroe United Methodist Church. Dan Graham conducted services. Burial was in the Waveland Cemetery in Prairie City. Survivors are four sons, Bill of Kellogg, Henry Jr. of Downey, Calif., Ronald of Dale City, Va., and Dick of Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter Willadean Wallace of Janesville, Wis.; 20 grand children and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Joe (Hazel) Tomlonovic of Newton and Mrs. Fred (Wilma) Jensma of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three infant children, a son Robert Burton, a brother and two sisters. The daughter of Jacob and Lucinda Wood Berkenbosch, she was born Feb. 16, 1901 in Rural Monroe. She was married Feb. 14, 1923 in Prairie City to Henry Steenhoek.
