Joseph Zapalac Buried Thursday Joseph Zapalac, 85-year old retired farmer who passed away at his home Tuesday, was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery yesterday, Thursday. Funeral services were conducted previously at the Church of the Assumption at 9 a.m. with Rev. E.J. Polcak officiating. Rosary had been recited Wednesday evening at Aderhold Chapel. Mr. Zapalac, a native Czechoslovakia, came to the United States and Fayette County, Texas, at the age of 10. He moved to West some 60 years ago and engaged in farming and carpenter pursuits for the remainder of his active life. He became ill some 6 years ago and was forced into semi-strict confinement at his home a mile south of town on the old Waco highway. He became more seriously ill during the past six weeks, and was taken to a Waco hospital for the last three weeks of his life. After all hope for his recovery was past, he was brought home where he passed away two hours later Tuesday. Mr. Zapalac was a member of SPJST fraternal order. Survivors are five sons, John Zapalac of Abbott, Henry Zapalac and Ludvik Zapalac, both of West, Emil Zapalac of Galveston, August Zapalac of Waco; two daughters, Miss Mary Zapalac of West and Mrs. Albina Kuchar of Dallas, one step-brother, John Mikus of Fayetteville; one step-sister, Rose Mikus of Fayetteville; 24 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were six grandsons, George Zapalac, Raymond Zapalac, Jerry Zapalac, Laddie Zapalac, Henry Zapalac and Emil Zapalac, Jr. The West News, West, Texas, Volume 64, No. 25, Edition 1, Friday, October 29, 1954, page 2.
