Vaclav Masek was the first person to be buried here. He is noted in the cemetery's Texas Historical Marker as the first burial in St. Mary's Cemetery in April 1892. The newspaper account of his death is riddled with errors since Vaclav's son-in-law Antonio Fabbre, an Italian married to Anna Masek, could not accurately describe what happened. Vaclav was a Bohemian, age 53, a farmer from West. He drove his mule team to Keton's Bakery (his daughter Mattie Masek was married to Frank Kveton/Keton) to pick up flour & other supplies. Before heading back to West, he came to visit his two granddaughters Marguarette & infant Mary. Their mother Anna had died recently due to complications of childbirth. When Vaclav pulled up to the Fabbre/Faber home on north 6th street, something spooked the mule team & they took off. Vaclav was thrown under the wagon and his head was crushed by the weight of the wagon that rolled over his body. Vincent is another way to say Vaclav. Poor Antonio's thick Italian accent must have flustered the reporter. Rest in Peace, Great-grandfather~your descendants have carried on your legacy. Contributor: Margie Davis (48653566
