Bio

Miss Rose Marie Sinkule, age 88 of West, passed away August 4, 1998 at West Rest Haven. Rosary was recited at 10 a.m. August 6 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:15 a.m., with Rev. Ed Karasek as celebrant. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery near West. Rose Sinkule was born February 18, 1910 in Tokio, Texas to Matt and Frances Hejl Sinkule. She was trained by the Benedictines in Chicago to teach religion to Hispanic children. She also accepted the position of housekeeper and secretary for Rev. Joseph Hildebrand in Fredericksburg. Her comfort of being with people from all walks of life was evident in Fredericksburg, when on many occasions, the then President Lyndon Johnson and his family attended Mass at the parish church. Because the President had to have a direct telephone line installed in the parish house, President Johnson’s press secretary, Bill Moyers drank many cups of her coffee while he manned the phone. Rose also played an integral role in preparing for the baptism of Lucy Johnson Nugent’s first child, who was baptized at the church in Stonewall, Texas. Among her other duties as housekeeper, she took care of the priests’ vestments, altar linens and was involved in many other church activities. After her retirement, she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption in West, the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America Court #829. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, an infant brother Alois and Jim Sinkule; three sisters, Frances Nors, Anastasia Soukup and Lillian Sinkule. Rose is survived by three brothers, Joe Sinkule and wife Mary, Johnnie Sinkule and wife Agnes, both of Hillsboro and Jerry Sinkule and wife Margaret of West, and sister-in-law, Martha Sinkule of West; and several nieces and nephews. The family received visitors at Kotch Funeral Home in West from 7 to 8 p.m. August 5.Kotch Funeral Home in West was in charge of arrangements.
