"Uncle Joe" Janak, Beloved Pioneer West Citizen, Drops Dead Joseph F. (Uncle Joe) Janak, long-time citizen of this community, dropped dead in the yard at his home here Monday morning about 8 o'clock. He had suffered from a heart ailment for some time, but had been able to be about town and his death came as a shock to the entire population of this section. Born in Fayette County almost 75 years ago, Uncle Joe spent his early days hauling freight, first using oxen and later, mules. He moved with his family to this city in 1900, where he resided until his death. A man of many occupations, Mr. Janak met and made many friends throughout Central Texas. He was a lover of fine livestock and spent several years in the livestock business. Uncle Joe was known throughout this section for his ability to move houses and other buildings, this being another of his many trades. He was also a dealer in gravel, owning one of the finest gravel pits in this section. Mr. Janak served as a peace officer in Texas for more than 50 years. He belonged to several civic and fraternal organizations and was a constant worker for the betterment and upbuilding of this city, county and state. Serving as "Marshal" at almost every local picnic and celebration, was a privilege enjoyed by Uncle Joe. As a political worker, he was well known in Central and South Texas. He took a great interest in every political campaign. For many years, Uncle Joe had been almost a daily visitor to the business district of West. He always had something interesting to discuss with his friends and acquaintances. Uncle Joe will be greatly missed, not only by the immediate family, but by his host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Assumption at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, with Msgr. J. Pelnar officiating, assisted by Revs. Polcak and Dobias. Interment was at the Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank Bezdek, Jos. Kotrla, Ed Deiterman, F.F. Lednicky, Andrew Marak and John Gerik. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. R.J. Marak, Mrs. Frances Kabela, Mrs. Sophie Janak and Miss Rose Janak, all of West; three sons, Joe and Chas. Janak of Smithville, and Jerome Janak of West; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Prasifka, Mrs. W.M. Koehl and Mrs. Frank Walla of Ellinger, and Mrs. Annie Rek of Fayetteville, and five grandchildren.
