Rites Held At St. Ann's Church For C. J. Kurtz Charlie J. Kurtz, of Yoakum, age 64 years, 11 months, and 11 days, passed away at 11:05 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 1967, in the M. D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, where he had been a patient for five days. Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel in Yoakum. Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, from the Buffington Chapel and at 10 a.m. with Requiem Mass at St. Ann's Catholic Church near Yoakum. The Rev. Father John Matocha officiated at the last rites and graveside services in St. Ann's Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Paul Kurtz of Placedo; Marvin Kurtz, Eugene Simper, and Frank Hrncirik, all of Shiner; Frank Berckenhoff Jr. of Houston; and Eugene Kremling of Eagle Lake. Charlie J. Kurtz was born on January 28 1902, at Shiner, son of Joseph and Magdalene (Lauer) Kurtz, natives respectively of Micoviah, Germany, and Frelsburg Colorado County, Texas. He was reared in the Shiner community, and in 1921 was married to Mrs. Pauline Havel, nee Hrncirik. The couple first made their home at Shiner. In 1936, the family moved to Gonzales County, and, after two years, returned to Shiner. Later they moved to the Petersville community. His usual occupation was that of farming. His wife, Mrs. Pauline Kurtz, passed away on February 28, 1946. After this, he made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Vinklarek and family in Yoakum. Survivors include two sons, Edwin Kurtz of Placedo, and Alfonse Kurtz of Cuero; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Pauline) Berckenhoff of Shiner, and Mrs. Martin (Helen) Vinklarek of Yoakum; a step-daughter, Mrs. Alphonse (Elizabeth Havel) Kurtz of Shiner; two brothers, Joe Kurtz Sr. of Schulenburg, and Clement Kurtz Sr. of Shiner; two sisters, Mrs. John (Katie) Dolezal of Shiner, and Mrs. John (Agnes) Wiles of Houston; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his father on March 17, 1952; his mother on November 11, 1938; and five brothers, Ben died on December 31, 1934, Victor passed away on January 1, 1942, Edward Kurtz died on April 1, 1944, John P. Kurtz passed away on May 2, 1966, and William B. Kurtz died on June 7, 1966; a sister, Mrs. Albert (Frances) Dolezal Sr. died on July 20, 1966; and two grandchildren. A kind and good neighbor, friend, and father has been called to rest, and death has again claimed a native born, lifelong resident of this community and area.
