Bio

Joseph Hofbauer was born in Obing, Upper Bavaria, Germany on March 17, 1850. When he was 31 years old, he came to America through Houston and settled in Tours, Texas. He came because had heard his friend Frank Guggenberger had died and left behind a widow and daughter and he was going to take care of them. Mrs. Agatha Guggenberger had a 10-year-old daughter named Otillie. After a two year courtship, Agatha relented and finally married Joseph on November 14, 1883. They had no children of their own, but raised foster children: Martin Winkler, Frank Berger, Frank Urbanovsky, and many others temporarily. On Feburary 18, 1899, Agatha died of pneumonia. Joseph didn't waste any time finding a new wife. He met Louisa Wanke who had been born in Partschendorf, Austria on August 30, 1874. Her family had also docked at Houston and settled at Tours. They married on September 18, 1899 in St. Martin's Church in Tours. They had six children: Joseph, John, Clem, Gertrude, Andrew and William. William did not live long. In December of 1911 the family moved to Muenster. They settled on a farm about a mile South of town. The farm has been in the Hofbauer family ever since. Joseph died at his home at the age of 82 on December 20, 1932. He is survived by his wife, Louisa, sons: Joseph Jr, of Dallas, John of Herford, Clem and Andy of Muenster and a daughter Sr. Frances (Gertrude) of Holy Angels Convent in Jonesboro, Arkansas, 8 grandchildren
