Uncle Joe was born in Tours, Texas to Joseph and Louisa Wanke Hofbauer. He and his family moved to Muesnter in 1911 and settled on a farm just south of town. He attended Sacred Heart School and helped his father on the farm. He later sold Raleigh products and Singer sewing machines. He also was a substitute mail carrier. In the mid-20's he bought and operated a cafe that was located where the Ace Hardware store is located. In 1927, he sold the cafe to Louie Bernauer and moved to Dallas. After working in several cafes, he went to work for Dixie Wax Company. He met and married Idabelle Brown on April 15, 1934. In 1949, after having no children, they adopted a 15-month-old daughter, Sylvia Marie. Joe worked for the Dixie Wax Company for 20 years then retired. They then moved to Muenster and resided there for the remainder of his life.
