Rose Spitz SHELBY — ROSE MARIE (GABEL) SPITZ, 90, OF SHELBY, PASSED AWAY TUESDAY, FEB. 10, 2009 AT DAVID PLACE IN DAVID CITY. SHELBY — Rose Marie (Gabel) Spitz, 90, of Shelby, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at David Place in David City. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with Father John Rooney officiating. Interment will be in the Shelby Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 at the church with a 7 p.m. Rosary. Rose was born March 21, 1918 in rural Polk County to John and Millie (Novak) Kubicek Jr. She grew up in rural Polk County and attended school there. On May 1, 1940 she was united in marriage to Herman L. Gabel at St. Andrew Church in Polk County. The couple lived on the family farm where Rose was a homemaker until Herman passed away as a result of an auto accident in August of 1967. She later was married to Albert Lux until he passed away due to bad health. She then married George Spitz. Rose worked as an aide at the Osceola Good Samaritan Society and also as a cook at Shelby Public School. She was a member of the Senior Center in Shelby, Shelby Legion Auxiliary, St. Anne's Guild and Shelby Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She enjoyed making quilts, gardening, playing cards, bingo and Polka music. She was always willing to help others when asked, and baked and served food for community functions. Rose cherished the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Jerome (Nancy) Gabel of Columbus, and Darrell (Karen) Gabel of Shelby; one daughter, Diane (Larry) Connelly of Shelby; one sister, Lillian Dawes of Osceola; brother, Edward Kubicek of Columbus; three grandsons, Rodney (Christine) Gabel of Lincoln, Jeremy Gabel of Lincoln and Clark Gabel of Shelby; one granddaughter, Melissa Gabel of Columbus; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Josie Gabel of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Herman Gabel, Albert Lux and George Spitz; brothers, John, Charlie, Emil, William and Joseph Kubicek; and two sisters, Helen Alt and Mary Glatter.
