Services are at Highland Terrace Baptist Church Monday at 2 p.m. with Bob Layman, Larry Jordan, Bobby Renfro, Royce Litchfield and Jimmy Rose officiating. Burial will follow in Memoryland Memorial Park. Visitation is at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Born July 24, 1923, to William Franklin and Dora Bolton Shields, he married Jettie Lamm on Sept. 27, 1942. His grandfather was one of the Texas Giants honored with a historical marker north of Greenville. Serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he was stationed in the South Pacific in the Solomon Islands for 28 months. He began working in the Greenville Post Office in 1955, then became Postmaster of the Celeste Post Office from 1975 until his retirement in 1983. Since 1949, he had been an active member of Highland Terrace Baptist Church (formerly Washington Street Baptist Church), He served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, served on numerous committees and was a trustee of the church. He was a member of the Celeste Lions Club, the Appraisal Board of Hunt County, as well as the Caddo Basin Water Board. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Jettie Shields; his daughter, Karen Shields Farrar and husband Charles of Wylie; a son, Rusty Shields and wife Paulette of Carthage; a grandson, Jeffrey Long of Richardson; and granddaughters, Tracy Gaines and husband Brian of Richmond, Robyn Shields of Houston and Caitlin Shields of Carthage. Other survivors include sister-in-law Inez Shields of Greenville, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and Weldon Shields; and five sisters, Bernice Green, Stella Blaylock, Ruby Friar, Norma Cody, and Opal Turner. Pallbearers will be Jerry Bench, Charles Roberts, Richard Hardy, Neel Dearing, Marvin Flowers and Taylor Green. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Highland Terrace Baptist Church and the Coleman Sunday School Class.
