Thanks to contributor #48786212 Henry Smith Dies; Rites on Wednesday (Saturday September 4, 1954) Henry M. Smith, 84, 2721 21st street, died at 6:30 a.m. today in the Lutheran Hospital. He had been ill about three months. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Methodist church, the Rev. Paul Hillman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Columbus cemetery. Henry Martin Smith, son of Henry W. and Betsey Jurn (Gern) Smith, was born April 26, 1870 in a sod house in Colfax country. From there the family moved to Pennsylvania where they lived two years before returning to Colfax County. He attended school in a log school house at McAllisterÂ’s Lake. On July 3, 1894 he was united in marriage to Priscilla Jane Keller at North Bend. They lived on farms in Colfax and Platte counties before moving to Columbus to make their home. Mr. Smith worked as a carpenter for the Union Pacific Railroad for 33 years before he retired Nov. 1, 1951. He was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are his wife, two sons; Elmer of San Diego and Everett of Omaha; four daughters; Mrs. Alfred (Mayme) Schram of Monroe, Mrs. Walter (Elsie) Lusche, Mrs. Sue Speicher and Mrs. Bill (Esther) Campbell of Columbus; one sister, Mrs. Lena Pease of Columbus; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Other survivors include a niece, Mrs. James Nichols of Panama, whom Mr. and Mrs. Smith raised from childhood. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers.
