GUS ERNST TO BE HELD ON MONDAY - Funeral services for Mrs. Gus Ernst, 84, who passed away at her home early Friday afternoon will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Federated Church with Rev. E. G. Brinkmeyer officiating, assisted by Rev. Franklin E. Wales, pastor. Burial will be made in the Columbus Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 11 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday at the Gass Funeral Home. As Elizabeth Smith, she was born May 1, 1865, the daughter of Henry Smith, at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. When three years of age she came with her parents to Nebraska where they homesteaded six miles east of Columbus, where she grew to womanhood. She received her education in rural schools and as a young woman came to Columbus to take employment. While working in Columbus she met Gustav Ernst, whom she married on his twenty first birthday anniversary, April 26, 1888 in Schuyler. Mrs. Ernst, a resident of this community for over 81 years was active in the Congregational Church for many years and affiliated with the Federated Church after it was formed by the Congregational and Presbyterian Churches. She was a member of the Congregational Ladies Aid Society and has been a member of the Federated Ladies Aid Society since it was organized. She was a member of the Vashti Rebekah Lodge, No. 108 for 47 years, of the Rebekah Kensington for the last 19 years. She was also a member of the YMCA Ladies and San Souci Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Vera Nichols of Columbus and Mrs. Edward Robinson of Omaha; one son Raymond Ernst of Windham, Montana; five grandchildren, Albert R. Ernst of Valley, Paul E. Ernst of Columbus, Mrs. Elwin Saalfeld of Orange, California, Carl R. Ernst ofSt. Louis, Missouri and Betty Nichols of Buffalo, New York; three great grandchildren, Judy Ernst, Tommy Ernst and John Ernst; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Pease and Mrs. Elvina Hoarn, both of Columbus; one brother, Henry M. Smith of Columbus. She was preceded in death by her husband Gustav and one son, Albert R. Ernst.
