Richard was a Sargent in the Army and was stationed in Florida, Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, Michigan, and Tennessee. He completed training as a mechanic and gunner on a B-24. Richard married Catherine Booth on May 5, 1968 in Walhalla, Oconee County, South Carolina. They lived in East Point and Cleveland, Georgia. He was a mechanic with Delta Airlines for 39 years where he worked in the maintenance department in Atlanta, Georgia, for almost 40 years. He always said he enjoyed it very much. A few years before he retired, he completed a job that saved Delta $50,000. This got the attention of top management. The completion of the flying machine in 1995 was a dream he had for forty years and in a way Delta helped make that dream a reality. He named it the "Miss Jenni" in honor of his youngest granddaughter. In total, he built one airplane, helped build another one and restored one. His hobbies included working on airplanes, flying and woodworking. For one of his projects he carved a chain with a cage and enclosed ball on the end from one solid piece of wood.
