Duncan Banner, Thurs., Feb. 03, 2011 THOMAS M. "TOM" GROOMS, 87, of Duncan, Okla., died on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Duncan Regional Hospital in Duncan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church West, with the Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Services are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. He was born Thursday, July 12, 1923, in Duncan, the son of Derrell and Joanna (Hire) Grooms. He married Novaleen Darter on Nov. 22, 1951, in Duncan. She preceded him in death on Dec. 6, 2006. Tom was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Corps. He was co-owner of Grooms Floor Coverings for 72 years, retiring in 1993. Tom was a member of New Hope Baptist Church West. Survivors include three sons, Mike Grooms and his wife Meiling of Lawton, Randy Grooms, and Rodney Grooms and his wife Carla, all of Duncan; three sisters, Patty Harris, Gloria Culp and Nellie Grooms, all of Duncan; seven grandchildren, Kelly Porter, Kari Grooms, Jordan Grooms, Kayla Hecox, Codye Grooms, Justin Grooms and Haylie Grooms; five great-grandchildren, Kinnedy Porter, Jaycee Porter, Jillian Porter, Cale Porter and Dax Hecox. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister and a grandson, Joshua Grooms. Honorary pallbearers are Jake Gunkel, Murry Burum and Frosty Minnick. Entered Air Corps in Jan 1942, trained in Jefferson Barracks, MO and Lake Charles LA, served in England, France, Belgium and Germany; now honorably discharged.
