Bio

Nellie Jo Grooms, 80, of Duncan, entered the presence of Jesus Wednesday, March 1st ,2017, in Edmond, OK. A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 6th at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Robbins officiating and Holden McCrackin assisting. Burial will follow in Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to7 pm on Sunday, March 5th at Don Grantham Funeral Home. Nellie was born October 11, 1936, in Duncan to Derrell and Joanna Grooms. She graduated from Duncan High School in 1955 and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1961 with a degree in elementary education. Nellie taught elementary students for 32 years. She loved her students and was like a mother to many. She was a faithful and active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she had attend since age six. You could usually find her with a smile on her face greeting people before service or holding babies in the nursery. Nellie is survived by a sister, Gloria Culp, of Duncan, her nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known as “Ottie” and adored by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Tom Grooms and T.D. Grooms, and two sisters, Derreline Land and Patty Harris. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Greg Culp, Jeff Culp, Bubba Grooms, Randy Grooms, Rodney Grooms, Mike Grooms, Harold Wayne Harris, and Rusty Harris. Wallace Mooney is an honorary pallbearer. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
