THE DECATUR REVIEW DECEMBER 24 1908 J.W.RAY, PIONEER BURIED IN SULLIVAN AGED MAN LEFT EIGHT CHILDREN WITH THREE WIVES. SULLIVAN, DEC.24, The funeral of James W.Ray was held this afternoon at 1 oclock at the residence, T.J.Wheat officiating. The interment was at Greenhill. The deceased was one of the oldest and well known pioneers of Moultrie county, having come here as a child from Shelby County Ten. where he was born Feb.10, 1844. He has lived in the county ever since he moevd to Sullivan about four years ago where he has lived in retirement enjoying the results of an active successful life of a farmer. Eight children survive. He has been married four times the last wife surviving together with eight children from the first three marriages The first wife was Mary Monroe, children Christopher Ray from Altamont, Willie and Enoch of this county. The second wife was Tina Wright and five children survive,Mrs.Ida DeHart,Hattie Roberts,Mrs.Stella Sheeks and two sons Earl and Herschel. The deceased married Mariah Rhodes who survives. Ida Bacon with two sons survive,Lafayette Bearden and Elmer David Ray. All children survived their father. Marriages: Mary C. Monroe July 1866 Mary Martina Wright July 1883 Ida Bacon-Garver Jan 1899 Mariah Shelby March 1903 I believe that James divorced Mary Martina Wright and kept the children from this marriage
