The Herald Coaster, January 10, 2002: Flags were flying at half mast Wednesday afternoon in honor of Marvin Mensik, chaplain and former interim and assistant fire chief of the Rosenberg Fire Department. Mensik died Wednesday morning at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston. Mensik became a paid fireman for the city of Rosenberg in 1977 after serving as a volunteer firefighter since he was 14 years old. He moved up in the department to the position of assistant chief at the time of his retirement in 1992. He was also a member of the fire department's award-winning pumper team. During his days as a firefighter, Mensik responded to the Texas City Disaster in the 1940s and often drove the fire truck on calls. Mensik was involved in the community, serving one term on the Rosenberg City Council and as a crossing guard for Travis Elementary after his retirement from the fire department. He retired from school crossing duties last May. Mensik and his brothers, Daniel and John, owned and operated Mensik's Grocery at the corner of Avenue H and Second Street for many years. In 1976, the family sold the store. He is the father of current Rosenberg fire chief, Greg Mensik. Services for Mensik are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg where he was a parishioner. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors Chapel, 1201 Fourth St. in Rosenberg. He is survived by his wife, Alice Mensik, his sons, Marvin Lee Mensik of Atlanta, Allen Mensik and Greg Mensik, both of Rosenberg, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a sister, Claudia Weleczyk, a brother, Frank Mensik, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services are under the direction of Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, Inc. in Rosenberg, (281)-342-4671.
