Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Nada. Visitation will be 2-7 p.m. with a Parish prayer service and Rosary recited at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, at Henneke Funeral Chapel in Columbus. Mary was born Nov. 6, 1909, on the family farm in Weir to Frank and Marie Nejtek Martinka. Mary was the oldest of 17 children. Mary's fondest memories of childhood revolved around family life with her father on the farm and her mother's love and great Czech cooking. Growing up on a large farm, Mary helped with the daily farm chores, but her life focused on helping her mom with the rearing of her 16 younger brothers and sisters. She was a little girl with a woman's duties, but she gained strength and family values that would serve her well throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Marie Martinka; her loving husband of 68 years, Jerry Kuba; her beloved son, Louis, age 25, a Houston police officer killed in the line of duty; her brothers, Frank, John, Timothy, Paul, Pete and George Martinka; her sisters, Hattie Stuchly, Martha Kaderka, Helen Oryschak and Annie Klepac; son-in-laws, Ken Dooley and Mainer Gavranovic and great-granddaughter, Katie Lynn Kwiatkowski. She is lovingly survived by her children, Henrietta (Jerry) Decker of Anton and Teddy (Dorothy) Kuba of El Campo, Mildred (Charley) Squyres of Columbus, Rudy (Vivian) Kuba of Beasley, Milton Kuba of Altair, Rita Gavranovic of Wharton, Helen Dooley of Richmond, Norbert (Janice) Kuba of West Columbia and Andrew (Pat) Kuba of Rosenberg; daughter-in –law, Pat Pettus of Jewett; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind brothers, Cyril Martinka of Providence, R.I.; Joe Martinka of Marble Falls, Bill Martinka of Chicago, Ill. and Henry Martinka of Granger; sisters, Tracy Gilliam of Grangerand and Agnes Polasek of Shiner as well as numerous nieces and nephews. As a young girl, Mary attended St. Cyril Methodius Catholic School in Granger. In the height of the roaring 20s Mary belonged to the Czech (Sokol) Dance Team performing exhibitions in the area. She also worked as a nurse's aid in a children's orphanage in Austin, up until her marriage in 1935. She was a devoted wife and mother, always standing by her husband's side and rearing her children to be good Christian men and women. Mary was a member of the Nada Christian Mothers, as well as a member of KJZT Society. She could read, write and speak Czech fluently and loved anything and all activities pertaining to her Czech heritage. Mary's favorite past times included flower gardening and quilting. She loved to quilt and made hundreds of quilts in her lifetime for friends and family. She also was a fantastic cook and was known for her apple strudel and pastry making. Never a day went by that fresh kolaches and homemade bread were not cooling on the kitchen table. She enjoyed making big Sunday dinners and spending that special day surrounded by her children and loving grandchildren. The family wishes to express a special thank you to their brother, Milton Kuba, who was the primary caregiver of their mom for so many years and also to Marie and Leslie Glover for the special care they extended to Mary and to Betty Aguilar and Rebecca Navarro. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mary to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 307, Eagle Lake, TX 77434 or Nada Christian Mothers, P.O. Box 98, Nada, TX 77460. It's not the years in your life that count, it the life in your years. – Abraham Lincoln
