LOUIS RAYMOND KUBA BADGE # 2074 KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY AS A HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER Louis Raymond Kuba, 25, passed away Wednesday morning, May 17, 1967, in a local hospital. Mr. Kuba, a Houston Police Officer, died from a gunshot wound to the head which he received in the Line of Duty during the Texas Southern University riot. He was a native of Schwertner, Texas, having been born there on March 12, 1942, and a former resident of Altair, Texas. He was a Houston resident for the past two years, Police Officer for the City of Houston, member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church, member of KJT Lodge in Nada, Texas, and a member of the Houston Police Officers Association and the Texas Municipal Police Officers Association. He served his country honorably in the United States Army. Mr. Kuba is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Ann Kuba of Houston, who was pregnant at the time of his death. Their daughter, Karen Lynette, was born two months later. Surviving him are his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Kuba of Altair, Texas, grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Martinka of Granger, Texas, and mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Bartlett of Houston. Also mourning his passing are four sisters-Mrs. Henrietta Decker of Anto, Texas, Mrs. Mildred Squyers of Houston, Mrs. Rita Gravonic of Boling, Texas, and Miss Helen Kuba of Altair, and five brothers-Teddy Kuba of Garwood, Texas, Rudy Kuba of Beasley, Texas, Sp. 5 Milton Kuba of the U.S. Army, Norbert Kuba and Andy Kuba of Altair, Texas. A Bible vigil service was held at 8pm on Thursday, May 18, 1967, at the Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held at 10am on Friday, May 19, 1967, at St. Christopher Catholic Church at 8150 Park Place Boulevard. Burial followed in the Garden of Gethsemane Section of Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. Officer Kuba was shot and killed during a riot at Texas Southern University. Officer Kuba and other officers were storming a dormitory that students were shooting from. Officer Kuba was shot in the head and died seven hours later. Five suspects were arrested and charged in connection with beginning the riot in which Officer Kuba was killed. Officer Kuba had only been with the agency for 14 days.
