Bio

Married John Benesch on November 3, 1877 at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. '''''' The People's Banner (David City, Nebr.), November 10, 1949, p. 6, col. 5 & 6 FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. MARY BENESCH HELD AT ABIE CHURCH Last rites for Mrs. Mary Benesch, 90, who died at her home in Schuyler on Wednesday morning, Nov. 2, were held Saturday morning, Nov. 5. The Rev. V. E. Herman conducted a short prayer service at 8:45 a.m. at the Bideaux chapel in Schuyler, followed by services at Sts. Peter and Paul church at Abie, with the Rev. Boniface Tomek offering the requiem high mass. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were six grandsons: George, Daniel, Clem, Lenor, John and Fred Benesch. Mrs. Benesch had been ill for a week prior to her death. The daughter of John and Mary Proskovec, she was born in Kolovice, Czechoslovakia, Nov. 12, 1859, and came to the United States with her parents in 1875. They resided on a farm near Bruno. Her marriage to John Benesch took place at Abie on Oct. 16, 1877. They were the first couple to be married in the parish which Mr. Benesch had helped to organize. The Benesches lived in the Abie vicinity until 1890, when they moved to a farm near Octavia. The Benesch family were long connected with the history of the Abie church. They were charter members and donated the first bells to the church. Many years ago, in 1897, they created what was known as the Wayside Shrine on their homestead for family worship. It also served many neighbors and friends visiting or passing by. This small chapel was erected by Mr. Benesch after he bought the farm and found a setting of five oaks, similar to such a site near his home in Drosendorf, Austria. During the years and until Mrs. Benesch moved to Schuyler, they kept the place open and cared for it. During the season the chapel was decorated with bouquets of flowers by Mrs. Benesch. Mr. Benesch passed away on April 25, 1915. In 1947 Mrs. Benesch moved to her home in Schuyler. Mrs. Benesch is survived by four sons, E. A. of Schuyler, John of Octavia, Louis of Chicago, Ill., and Joseph, a member of the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature from Omaha; five daughters, Mrs. Clara Sobota of Schuyler, Mrs. Frank Kovar of David City, Mrs. John Chapek of Wahoo, Mrs. J. A. Simerka of Scribner, and Miss Martha Benesch of Sunnyside, Wash.; one sister, Mrs. John Janovy of David City; 22 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. One son, Otto, passed away on Nov. 11, 1935.
