Bio

Married Joseph Hlavac on July 12, 1881 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Abie, Nebr. '''''''''''''' Butler County Press (David City, Nebr.), February 6, 1930, p. 5, col. 4 FOR MRS. MARKETA HLAVAC Funeral services at Bruno on Friday, January 31. Bruno, Feb. 4 – Mrs. Marketa Hlavac, died at 11:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, Jan. 29, at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Kozisek. Mrs. Hlavac had suffered with diabetes for a number of years and her last critical illness was of six days duration. Funeral services were held on Friday forenoon, Jan. 31, from the Charles E. Kozisek home to St. Anthony's church, Rev. Father Bauer saying the Requiem Mass and conducting the burial service. Interment was in St. Anthony's Catholic cemetery, beside the grave of her husband. The pallbearers were six grandsons of the deceased, Ignac and Philip Odvody, Leander Yindrich, Fred Husak and Louis and George Semin. The members of the Holy Rosary society attended in a body, wearing their badges and with the banner of the society, surmounted by crepe streamers, carried in the funeral procession. Mrs. Marketa, a daughter of John and Marie Proskovec, was born in Stryckovice, Czecho-Slovakia, on November 24, 1860, and was 69 years, 1 month and 5 days of age at the time of her death. She was a resident of Nebraska for 56 years, coming to this state in 1874 with her parents when a child of 14 years. Her marriage to Joseph Hlavac took place at St. Peter and Paul's church at Abie. They were the parents of one son, James, who died when a small boy from injuries received in an accident when a team of horses ran away, and seven daughters, all of whom, with their families, were present at the funeral. The daughters are Mrs. Emma (Edward) Odvody of Prague, Mrs. Rosie (Jos. L.) Semin of Ulysses, Mrs. Annie (Frank) Husak of David City, Mrs. Mary (Ed F.) Yindrich of David City, Mrs. Albina (Louis) Laudenklos of Dodge, Mrs. Clara (L. J.) Kozisek of Bruno and Mrs. Ella (C. E.) Kozisek of Bruno. Mr. and Mrs. Hlavac began their married life on a farm, later moving to Bruno, where they were in business many years until the death of Mr. Hlavac December 4, 1911. Following her husband's death Mrs. Hlavac continued to make her home in Bruno with her aged parents, caring faithfully for them in their declining years until their death. She then resided in Bruno alone until her health began to fail, when she made her home with her daughters, Mrs. Clara Kozisek and later with Mrs. Ella Kozisek. Mrs. Hlavac was a good Christian woman, ever ready to do a kindness for the friend or neighbor who came her way. She was capable and efficient and whatever work was hers to do, and there was plenty of it for the pioneer daughter, wife and mother, was willingly and well done. Mrs. Hlavac is also survived by a number of grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three brothers, Antoine, V. A. and John Proskovec of Bruno, and three sisters, Mrs. Anton Sobolik of Abie, Mrs. Annie Janovy of Bruno and Mrs. Marie Benesch of Octavia. The funeral was very largely attended, many relatives and friends coming from a distance. Among them were Mrs Marie Benesch and family of Octavia, Mr. and Mrs. James Kastner of Ulysses, Mrs. Odvody and Mrs. John Landenberger and son, Otto, of Morse Bluff, Joseph Viglicky of Edholm, the Joseph Maca family of Staplehurst and the Fred Kozisek family and Mrs. J. Bongers of Brainard. ___ Card of Thanks – We wsih to express our sincere thanks to our friends and neighbors for their sympathy, kindness and beautiful floral offerings during the illness and at time of death of our dear mother, Mrs. Marketa Hlavac.
