The Howells Journal-July 31, 1941 The evening shadows fell asiant and spoke of peace as the twilight calm enclosed the world and Death entered the home and stilled the heart of Mrs. Marie Zacek. Those who gathered at her bedside noticed the look of sweet repose as with a sigh as of contentment, mortality gave way to immortality as the sleeper quietly and serenely passed into the new life beyond the human touch. She had suffered a severe attack of flu last winter which weakened her vitality and though able to be about until the day before her "death" she could not regain her strength. The deceased was born in 1863 in Mrakoven Domarlic, Kraj Plsen, Czechsovakia on the 20th day of June and Passed away at the age of 78 years, 1 month and 6 days. She came to this country in 1884 direct to Nebraska to the home of a relative Mrs. Catherine Frei in Dodge county and was married the same year to Mr. Karel Karnik the ceremony as in the case of the early settlers in this locality was soleminized at Secred Heart Church by Rev Tourek, one of the early pastors of the church. Since 1891 she made her home in Howells, Mr Karnik having conducted a retail shoe store here for a time previous to his death, December 12, 1908. Their family was comprised of two sons, Joseph J. Karnik of Clarkson and Emil Karnik of Omaha, and five daughters three of whom live in Omaha, Anne, wife of Jos Beran, Mrs Rose Loukota and sister M. Emanuala, Mary now Mrs Walter Arnold of Denver Colo. and Millie married to Fred Higgins of Berkley Calif. She was a good wife and a kind and understanding mother. Her home was her throne and mother love was her scepter. But her home could not contain her as one after another her children grew up and her personality and influence overflowed in to community in the form of church work, having been an ardent worker in St. John's Nep church at this place. Her life was rich with the spirit of God and her unselfish service was remarkable, ever actuated by the finest motives in harmoney with the teachings of the Catholic faith. Friendly, courteous, naturally industrious and generous to a fault, she gave of herself freely in the work of the auxillaries of the church, having been an active member of St Anna and St. Ludmila lodges and the Alter society. She attended many of the district, state and national conventions and served as vice chairman of the grand lodge of the St Anna organization. It will be remembered that at one time a lady of the grand lodge came from Washington D. C. to be her guest. Besides her immdiate family of children and two great-grandchilddren she is survived also by two brothers. Joseph Kalisek of this place and John Kalisek of Clarkson and two sisters, Miss Anna Kalisek of West Point and Dorothy wife of James Chladek of Pasco Wash. and also by 1 step grandchild and seven step-sons and step-daughters having been married at St. John's church on November 6, 1911 to Matt J. Zacek, who passed away Mary 3, 1929. the step-children are Otto, Middaugh and Casimer Zacek and Mrs Anna Schwedhelm of West Point, Mrs Pauline Broz of this place. Thomas Zacek of Lincoln and Mrs Martha Breckner of Spokane Wash. Mrs Zacek was a lady of srength, courage and willingness, She loved the great outdoors and to her the sunshine and rains of summertime meant a large, well-cared for garden and the growing of many varieties of lovely flowers and after her death her friends remembered her with a lavish gift of floral tributes besides a rich outpouring of spiritual bouquete. They recongnized in her women's heart a strong element of the eternal-tender, loyal, patient and true. She lived her life quietly, steadily and serene, not asking qreatly but hoping much and filled with prayerful dreams for the well being of her children and all she held dear. The funeral services were largely attended. The ladies of the church organizations in which the departed held membership acted as an escort of honor and after prayers at the family home where the remains laid in state amid a wealth of beautiful flowers. Rev Jos Drbal continued with requiem mass at St. John's church assisted by the church choir. The casket rested before the alter during the holy rites and was conveyed to St. John's cemetery.
